Nissan 300ZX - History & Facts
The Nissan 300ZX is a coupe sports compact car…
that was sold between 1983 and 2001. As with other Nissan Z cars, in Japan it was marketed and sold as the Fairlady Z, while around the world simply the 300ZX. The addition of the “X” in the name was Nissan’s designation for indicating features in the car that were more luxury and comfort providing. The official chassis code for the first generation of the Nissan 300ZX was “Z31”. This model was made between the years 83’-89’.
In 1990, Nissan introduced the second generation “Z32”. They aimed at more horsepower and more advanced technology, but with that, and just inflation in general, the price tag also bumped up. As the sticker priced increased year over year, it had an inverse impact on sales, in which Nissan stopped selling the 300ZX to the United States in 1996. Production continued to slow and the 300ZX ultimately was canned by Nissan in 2001.
Nissan 300ZX 1983-1989 – Z31 First Generation:
Building on its predecessor, the Nissan 280ZX, the 300ZX came with a V6 engine which was mounted to your choice of a 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual. These models also offered a fully digital climate control. While the chassis was based on the previous 280ZX, it was famed to handle and get up and go far better.
1986 Facelift: As with most facelift models, body kit styling included paint matched panels, larger rims and more were added. 87’ was the final round of updates including headlights, fog lights and the first in history central LED brake light. As with many other Nissan cars, their pre and post facelift are noted by the Chinese Characters Zenki (prior period) and Kouki (latter period).
Nissan 300ZX 1989-2000– Z32 Second Generation:
This generation had a ton of upgrades and most are still commonly known and sought after. This includes the Twin Turbo version and the T-Tops. Initially this model was being sold for about $30K USD, but as with the previous generation Z31, price continued to increase year over year landed it at $50K USD in its final year.
